The differences between Windows Live Skydrive and Google Docs in terms of:

Storing documents

GoogleDocs

  • Uses Gears so can access offline too

SkyDrive

  • Using folders etc…
  • Can publish it publically

Note document size

Google Docs

  • Docs: Each doc can have a maximum size of 500K, plus up to 2MB per embedded image.
  • Spreadsheets: Each can be up to 256 columns, 200,000 cells, or 100 sheets–whichever is reached first. There’s no limit on rows.
  • Presentations: Files in .ppt and .pps formats can have a maximum size of 10MB or 200 slides; files uploaded from the Web can be up to 2MB; emailed files can be up to 500K.
  • PDFs: You can store up to 10MB per PDF from your computer and 2MB from the Web in your Docs list, up to 100 PDFs.

SkyDrive

  • File size is limited to 50 MB, and total storage is limited to 5 gigabytes (GB).

Type limitations

GoogleDocs

  • HTML
  • Plain text (.txt)
  • Microsoft Word
  • RTF
  • Open Office (.odt)
  • xls, xlsx, csv, ods, txt, tsv, or tsb format.
  • .ppt and .pps file

SkyDrive

  • Any type! As long as the file is not larger than 50 MB. Try using a file compression program to make the file smaller, and then try to upload the file again.

GoogleDocs

  • Documents – 5000 docs and presenationas and 5000 images
  • Spreadsheets – You have a limit of 1000 spreadsheets
  • Presentations – You have a combined limit of 5000 documents and presentations and 5000 images.

SkyDrive

  • File size is limited to 50 MB, and total storage is limited to 5 gigabytes (GB).

Ease of uploading and downloading documents

GoogleDocs

  • To upload a document, spreadsheet, or presentation, follow these steps:
  1. Click the Upload button at the top of the sidebar in your Docs list page.
  2. Click Browse.
  3. Select the document, spreadsheet, or presentation you’d like to open.
  4. Click Open.
  5. Click Upload File. The uploaded file appears in your Docs list.

SkyDrive

  • Uses an easy Drag and drop feature fantastic! however, you must intsall the upload tool and therefore must meet the requirements (ie. certain Operating Systems and browsers)
